Recent Legislative Success!
Have you heard about the invasive Callery Pear tree? Our team dedicated months of effort to secure its ban—and we achieved success!
We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in our advocacy efforts. In June 2024, the Maryland General Assembly passed the Biodiversity and Agriculture Protection Act (HB0979/CH0590), which includes a crucial provision to ban the Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), an invasive species harming our local ecosystems. From 2022 to 2024, Nurture Natives youth engaged with civic leaders, legislators, and nursery owners to discuss the need for this ban. Our team is proud to have supported this initiative, sponsored by the Maryland Native Plant Coalition, by contributing hundreds of signatures through our petition and educating thousands of Marylanders about the detrimental effects of the Callery Pear on our native species and local crops.
